Four trenches were opened up off Lancasterian St. in Carrickfergus, in advance of urban development; a total area of 308m2 was investigated.

The 16th-century defensive ditch, 4.7m wide and 1.5m deep, was uncovered, running east-west, and was found to contain pottery, leather, tiles, cloth, iron blades and part of a human skull.
