The village of Collon, a grange of Mellifont in the Middle Ages, became the estate village of the Foster family. Test trenches excavated on a site for a house uncovered a ditch with a right-angle turn orientated diagonally to the present alignment of properties. The ditch, 2m wide and 0.6m deep below topsoil, had a fill of wet grey silt with abundant, decayed roots. A small body sherd of unglazed red earthenware, probably post-medieval, was recovered from the fill. The ditch, possibly a field boundary or garden enclosure, evidently predates the present layout of Collon, attributed to the Regency period.
