This site is 20m to the west of Derryvullan burnt mound No 1. It was discovered in the summer of 1994 during the excavation of the latter mound, and it too was excavated by Environment Service: Historic Monuments and Buildings.
The site appeared as a very slight rise on the land about 3m across. Under a layer of soil about 0.2m thick, a deposit of burnt mound material was found. This consisted of burnt, shattered sandstone pieces in a black matrix rich in charcoal. The entire burnt mound deposit was contained in an oval pit dug through a stratum of lacustrine blue-grey plastic clay, stone-free for the most part, 0.3m thick, which underlay the soil. The pit was dug through the entire thickness of the clay and was floored with the till which underlay the clay. The plan dimensions of the pit were 2.3m by 1.5m at the top and 1.5m by 1.1m at the flat bottom. The pit was not quite full to the brim with burnt mound material at the edges but was filled to full extent of its depth at the centre. At the base of the pit a large slab of unburnt sandstone boulder emerged from the till and protruded through the clay and the soil. Its top was visible before excavation, flush with the ground surface. The entire deposit of burnt mound material was excavated. No finds or structures were found, other than some fairly horizontal thin shelves of burnt mound material which extended outwards beyond the generality of the bounds of the pit a few centimetres into the clay. No further investigation of this site is planned.
