The planning permission laid down a series of monitoring, testing and excavation requirements. Monitoring was carried out between October 1993 and August 1994 during the construction of Block 5, the building which encroaches closest to the monastic enclosure of St Maelruan. The excavation of a trench for a storm drain exposed the inner ditch. Cia McConway, for ADS, carried out the excavation of three trenches through the inner and outer ditches (see Excavations, 1994, No 102).

A test trench was excavated by machine along the south elevation of Block 5; this was to investigate the possible presence of a borough boundary of the medieval village of Tallaght and/or a ditch feature which was picked up by M. Gowen in testing in 1991 (Excavations 1991, 18). No such feature was observed in the test trench.
