Testing of the site was required prior to granting of planning permission. The adjoining site, 23–27 Stephen St. was excavated in 1992 (Excavations 1992, 26).

Three trenches showed that there had been basements in Nos. 28 and 30. There was no evidence for the survival of archaeological material underneath those premises. A possible pit had survived under the limestone floor of No. 29 (10.42m OD Poolbeg); it was filled with a dark grey silty soil containint cockle shell, charcoal and some animal bone. It was similar to the pits found on the 23–27 Lr. Stephen St. site.
