An archaeological assessment was carried out on behalf of Dublin Corporation on a site to the rear of the Mansion House. The site is close to Kildare St., where a Viking-period sword (possibly indicating a Viking burial) was found during construction of the present National Museum of Ireland in the 1880s. In order to investigate the possibility of Viking burials occurring on the present site, four trenches, each 1m wide and 3–5m long, were mechanically excavated, but no archaeological deposits or features were noted.
