A total of 14 weeks' work was carried out in 1994 by the North Munster Project of The Discovery Programme. The main focus of excavation was areas where archaeological activity was most likely to have taken place and survived. Three hut sites were identified after tree clearing on the south-west side of the middle enclosure. An area with good soil cover on the south facing slope between the inner and middle ramparts was also investigated. This included test pits over the area; cuttings crossing the inner and middle ramparts and the examination of possible entrances. Evidence for pre-rampart activity was found underlying the ramparts. This took the form of a black sticky deposit which contained sherds of coarse ware pottery and was found under the inner rampart at the south-east and under the middle rampart at the south of the hill. As well as coarse pottery this deposit contained large amounts of unburnt animal bone. A further season is planned for 1995.
