The site at Tintern, Co. Wexford, a former Cistercian abbey, is a national monument in the care of the OPW. It was previously excavated by Dr A. Lynch in 1982/83 and work was concentrated mainly in the nave and chancel. The 1993 season, which lasted six weeks, was undertaken to clear areas for proposed visitor facilities. Substantial remains of the south aisle wall and cloister arcade walls were uncovered, including the remains of a ‘pulpitum collationes’ or collation lectern, only the second example to date that has been found in Ireland. Large quantities of cut stone from the cloistered arcade and some painted plaster were also recovered.
A further season is planned for summer 1994.
