Test investigations were carried out on the above site in February 1993, to ascertain the nature, depth and extent of archaeological strata present prior to redevelopment. The easternmost property appeared to be devoid of archaeological strata, containing as it did, a large barrel vault fronting onto the street (to the north) with indications of further cellars to the rear. The central property was also disturbed to the south by cellars. To the north, however, archaeological layers were identified at, or just below, ground level. These appeared to be house floors and were reasonably securely dated to the 13th century. The westernmost property seemed to have been backfilled in the south to a depth varying between 0.65m and 1.1m. Archaeological layers, however, were present below this level, and again were domestic in nature. To the north in this property, the archaeological layers were present at, or just below ground level.

Full excavation was recommended and this commenced under the directorship of Mr. Martin Reid (see Excavations 1993, No. 217).
