This site, on which an extension to the Westcourt Hotel is being planned, lies immediately to the north of the Stockwell Lane/Wellington Quay (development described in Excavations 1993, Nos 159-160). The ground slopes up from the south to north, ie from the river to West St.
Three trenches were excavated by machine.
Trench 1 at the south-west corner exposed a deep deposit of soft grey-brown silty clay with bone and shell but produced nothing of archaeological significance.
Trench 2 at the south-east end produced the same silty clay. A lens of very organic material was exposed lying in a crevice in the underlying rock: this was at a depth of 1.2m below the surface and was 0.8m north-south x 0.3m deep.
Trench 3 exposed only a dark loose grey/brown soil.
Due to the presence of the organic lens a watching brief was maintained during the digging of the foundations. However, nothing further of archaeological interest was found.
