Excavation in advance of conservation works took place over a four-week period in June and July 1993. The work concentrated on the Monks' Garden Area. Two cuttings were opened, one providing a section from the small cemetery to the outer wall of the garden and a second from the base of the wall of the church to the outer wall of the garden. Both cuttings revealed only 19th-century collapse, though only the eastern cutting could be bottomed for safety reasons. Much of the material dated to the occupation of the site by the builders of the lighthouses though a sherd of Saintonge Green Glaze was found, together with 19th-century material in the collapse.
