Trial trenching was carried out following proposals by Dublin Corporation to widen North King St. Four areas were zoned for testing on the south side of the road. Areas 1 and 3 recorded no archaeology. Area 2 was not made available for testing. Area 4, at the junction of Green St. and North King St., was also tested. Six trenches were dug, revealing a cemetery which may have been connected to the adjacent Debtors' Prison. Associated with this was a probable furnace, completely intact, below the present ground surface. It was constructed of red brick. Below this, evidence existed of a green/brown sticky soil layer of 0.8m depth containing post-medieval pottery. This lay on top of a dark humic layer containing sea shells (oyster, cockle, winkle, mussel) animal bone, wattle and post providing evidence of what appeared to be an early medieval occupation layer at a depth of between 3.8m and 4m. This layer lay directly upon natural gravel. Therefore, full excavation of Area 4 was recommended.
