The site is located at the north-east corner of the Christchurch Place complex, adjacent to and behind the Lord Edward Pub and southwards fronting onto Werburgh St.
Archaeological assessment of this site was carried out simply to establish the location of the archaeological deposits which were undoubtedly rich. It was based on the excavation of test pits and trenches and trial borings. The trenches and test pits were opened to establish the levels of the upper surface of the deposits and the trial borings were carried out to establish their depth and content. The trial borings indicated that most of the Block A site and over 50% of Block D had very rich intensive habitation deposits and house floors and that the Viking-Age bank ran across the southernmost portion of the Block D site (next to the entrance to the new multi-storey car park).
Based on the results, a pre-development excavation requirement was made a condition of the planning approval for the scheme and the excavation has been carried out by Alan Hayden and Claire Wlash (no. 59, 1993).
