Trial trenching was carried out on this site in March and May 1993 prior to development. Five trenches were opened up across the area, however, only one remaining feature seemed to survive the 19th- and 20th-century demolition activity. A possible fosse occurred at 2m below present ground surface. It measured 2.5m wide, c. 0.6m deep, cut the natural boulder clay and was filled with wood charcoal. The fosse however did not survive the building of the basement of house No. 39 and any remaining evidence for it ran eastwards outside the brief.
Archaeologically, it would be worthwhile to try to follow the line of the fosse, as it may be part of the early ecclesiastical enclosure known to be in this vicinity.
