The site is located inside the walled medieval town close to St. John's Priory on North Main St. The area was being developed for housing by Cork Co. Council and required archaeological testing prior to the development. Part of the site was tested in 1992 by Catryn Power (Excavations 1992, 11) and the work was completed in June 1993 by the writer.

The site is divided into two sections: one along Ashe St. and the other further south at Chapel Lane. Six strip test trenches were dug in the first section by mechanical excavator. Each trench was 1m wide. No features of archaeological significance were uncovered. A further three strip trenches were excavated at Chapel Lane. Two of these uncovered the remains of a grey silt which contained some sherds of medieval pottery. The silt survived for 8.5m east-west and 5m north-south. It was 0.4m thick and was uncovered at 0.5m below the modern ground surface. It may have been the remains of medieval occupation debris. It was recommended that the silt be removed by archaeological excavation prior to any development of the site.
