During monitoring of work at the Navan Visitor Centre a large feature was observed in a narrow trench cut for an earthing wire beside the footpath leading to Navan Fort. A small excavation showed that the feature was probably a 'ditch', 2.25m wide and 0.7m deep. Neither artefacts nor suitable dating material were recovered. A drainage channel, in part sealed by a layer containing 19th-century sherds, was cut through the ditch fill. Finally, the deposits were covered by a 19th-century trackway of clay and stones. A larger excavation would be necessary to have any hope of revealing the purpose and date of the shallow ditch.
