The watching brief arose as a result of the discovery, during pipelaying, of archaeological structures and deposits within the grounds of the Franciscan Friary in the spring of 1991 (see Excavations 1991, 48). Because no archaeological assessments have ever been carried in the town, OPW made a request for this watching brief. A ‘detailed paper’ search was made but yielded little historical material. No further features or deposits of archaeological interest were revealed and no archaeological artefacts were retrieved.
