In July 1992 human remains were discovered in the back garden of a dwelling house at 2 Connolly Street, Athlone (td Athlone and Bigmeadow), Co. Westmeath.274 They were apparently found in a ditch, described as measuring 0.9m by 1.2m and running north-east/south-west. The remains were given to Mr Gearóid O’Brien of Westmeath County Library, who handed them over to the NMI. The remains consisted of part of a child’s skull, an adult skull and part of a long bone of an animal. Their original disposition in the trench is not known (1992:25.1–3). According to Mr O’Brien, the ditch may have been related to entrenchments made at the time of the siege of Athlone in 1691.
