In removing a large slab which was obstructing agricultural works a cist burial was discovered at Carrigeens, Co. Sligo, in April 1992. The site was notified to the National Museum and excavated over a period of 3 days. The cist was approx. rectangular in plan (max. dims. 1m x 0.6m) and was made up of coarse sandstone slabs of local origin. The floor was partially lined with limestone slabs. The cist contained a cordoned urn with cremation. The pot was placed centrally within an arrangement of shale slabs set on edge. The cremation consisted of one sub-adult aged 14–16 years. The cremation also contained a bone toggle-like object and some cowrie (Trivia sp.) shells. A C- 14 date from charcoal is awaited.
