Trial trenching was carried out prior to building works because of the site's close proximity to a motte.
In all, 7 wide trenches were dug with a JCB to a total length of 50m. They ranged in depth from 0.9m to 2.5m. All trenches were dug to natural subsoil. Nothing of archaeological interest was uncovered.
