During 1992, 5 excavations were conducted in Co. Louth as part of an extensive archaeological investigation on the line of the Dunleer Dundalk Motorway Scheme, the Ardee Link Road and associated Road Improvement Schemes (nos 135, 136, 138-40 below). Further investigation of several sites is scheduled for 1993.
As road construction was scheduled to pass some 27m to the east of the impressive Castle Guard motte, investigation within the line of the road was recommended.
Though a significant area was excavated no traces of archaeologically important features were uncovered.
