The site is located on the presumed line of the medieval town defences. Three test trenches were excavated and showed that the lower portions of both town wall and external ditch had survived below the factory floor. The ditch appeared to have had a maximum width of c. 4m and depth of 1.6m. Only the lower portion of the wall (with barter), extending into the ditch, survived.
