Proposed renovations to the medieval structure involved the lowering of the basement floor. A trench was dug, abutting the southern wall foundations, to establish the original floor level of the building. A roughly cobbled floor surface was uncovered at a depth of 0.8m below the present floor level. This overlay geologically deposited gravels indigenous to the area. The cobbles were overlain by a layer of silt, which was in turn covered by a mortar floor. A coin dated to 1882 was associated with this floor level. No finds of any greater antiquity were retrieved.
Two barrel vaults at the western side of the basement underlie the cobbled laneway, known as the Butterslip, which runs beside the building. The developer proposed to retain all historic architectural features, disturbing only the floor in the basement by the insertion of a slab concrete floor and associated bedding. This would essentially remove the cobbles and later mortar floor. Office of Public Works architects were consulted on the matter.
