Three test pits were opened at the site of a small development on the northern side of Goat St as a condition of planning permission. This street lies within the probable boundary of the 16th-century town wall. Apart from a very shallow (0.15m) layer of modern overburden, there was nothing further of interest noted in the test pits as the natural sub-soil was then encountered. The site is at a much higher level than that immediately to the east, so it is unlikely to have suffered from major clearance attempts in the past. One can conclude that medieval occupation may not have taken place this far north—and away from the seafront—in the town, although there is documentary evidence for a 16th-century castle being situated c. 70m to the south-east, along the same road.
