Assessment of this site, by slit trenches through the existing 1960s basement slab revealed the foundations of the early 18th-century buildings on the site and organic-rich riverine/river-front silts largely dating from the 17th century.
Only one sherd of severely water-rolled medieval pottery was retrieved. A feature of the site was the discovery of 2 large, horizontal timbers, in the round, set in a north-south position. One of these, over 5m long, lay in a very rough, grooved joint on a 2nd 2m-long horizontal timber, lying east-west. These were held in position by wooden pegs driven into the silt. Both timbers lay on the old-ground surface, beneath the silt described above. Their function is not clear. They have no obvious joinery and there is no indication that they may have had a superstructure. However, the existence of rotted wooden beams beneath some of the foundations of the 18th-century walls may point to a function of that kind. A watching brief on the excavation for foundation trenches and pile-caps has been recommended.
