In May 1992 the writer conducted an archaeological assessment here on behalf of Dublin Corporation. Although c. 170m outside the walled medieval town of Dublin, the site lies within the Zone of Archaeological Interest outlined in the Dublin City Development Plan. South Great George's St (originally St George's Lane) is a medieval street and was the main axis of an important area of medieval suburban settlement. Richard Stanihurst stated in 1586 that: 'divers old and ancient monuments were builded in St George's Lane; and ... by the view there to be taken... the better part of the suburbs of Dublin should seem to have stretched that way'.
Thus the presence of some archaeological material on the present site was thought possible. Following a fire some years ago the site was cleared of buildings right down to the level of the basement floor, some 2.4m below the present street level. The method of assessment involved the digging of 2 trenches at right angles across the site. This revealed that the basement floor currently covering the site has been dug through whatever archaeological deposits may once have been present, and into undisturbed boulder clay below. Thus no archaeological material is now present on the site.
