Preliminary assessment of the eastern and southern side of the site was undertaken out by Andy Halpin in March 1992 (see no. 66, 1992) and further trenching on a narrow site at the north-west of the site (the Francis St frontage) was carried out in July 1992. There is a possibility that the site lies close to a Franciscan Friary. Andy Halpin's trenching revealed medieval clays beneath loose, basement demolition rubble. Two of the 3 trenches opened on the west side of the site yielded no evidence for any archaeological deposits beneath the demolished basement slab and the 3rd indicated that a 0.35m thick layer of clay with charcoal inclusions, probably of medieval date, existed in a very limited area measuring 8m x 5m.
