The Poddle culvert runs through this site and lies beneath the full width of a small triangular yard, due to be built on, at the back of the existing building. Assessment revealed the roof of the culvert and additional archaeological investigation, while it revealed the structure of the culvert, did not provide evidence for the date of construction. The Poddle was contained into its present, culverted, course at least as early as 1673 when it is depicted on the Yarrington/de Gomme map. It may have been constructed in this position as early as 1637 when it is referred to in documents relating to an extension of the site on which the old Custom House stood.
