The site covers an L-shaped area measuring a maximum of 90m by 80m and lies immediately inside the supposed line of the medieval supposed town defences around the south side of the town. A mid 19th-century house– St Joseph's (formerly Bayview House) occupied the south end of the site.
Fifteen trenches were opened by mechanical excavator between 4th–6th January 1992. Potential archaeological deposits only survived under a layer of redeposited subsoil laid down when the area to the north of the house was terraced to form a tennis court.
The former topsoil and 'B' horizon was fossilised beneath the redeposited subsoil and contained a few sherds of medieval pottery.
Subsequent monitoring of topsoil removal during development revealed no archaeological features and suggests that the area may have been farmland or gardens at the rear of long plots behind houses fronting onto the south side of the main street of the town.
The work was commissioned and financed by the developers.
