An archaeological assessment was carried out at the rear of 23 Main St, Chapelizod on Saturday 5th December 1992. Two trial trenches were excavated across the site, using a mechanical digger. The main features revealed by these trenches were as follows: 1. two cobbled yard surfaces; 2. a stone built cellar; 3. a domestic refuse-pit; 4. the clay subsoil.
The cobbled surfaces were late 18th or early 19th century in date, and so was the cellar. The refuse pit contained a redclay pantile, several fragments of yellow Sgraffito ware pottery, and a clay pipe. The clay pipe was dated 1720-50 (Joe Norton pers. comm.). No further excavation was deemed necessary.
