The quarry and landfill site in question is located within a few hundred metres of the early medieval church and graveyard of Killegar. When the owner of the site requested permission to extend his quarry, permission was granted with a condition of archaeological monitoring attached. During this monitoring a number of large stones set into charcoal flecked sandy loam were noticed. As a result the writer was requested to carry out further investigation and archaeological excavation of the area in question took place over the period of one day in June 1991.

An area roughly 6.3m x 3.8m was cleared and much of the sod/topsoil layer had been removed by a mechanical excavator. The stones were set into very light sandy loam with specks of charcoal throughout. A linear trench measuring 4.5m x 0.6m was excavated to a depth of c. 0.8m. Within this trench the stones were set into the same light, charcoal flecked sandy loam, and subsoil was exposed at a depth of c. 0.8m. No regular edge or face was apparent and the stones did not appear to form or ever have formed a built or man-made structure. A single sherd of medieval pottery was recovered from the sandy loam. Funding was provided by the developer.
