The proposal to construct a link road between McCurtain St and, Friars Mill Rd necessitated archaeological investigation. Two areas merited excavation. Firstly, the area along, and south of, the Friars Mill Rd which lies within the area of archaeological potential as defined by the Urban Archaeological Survey. Secondly, the area beside the River Brosna which, although outside the area defined by the survey, still had possible archaeological potential as early habitation or trading settlement would have been feasible along the river bank. The area in question measured approximately 80 sq. m. During a week in May 1991 the areas to be affected by road construction were subjected to archaeological investigation. No structures or material of archaeological significance were discovered at the site.
