In 1991 a human skull was found following dredging operations in the Ballinlough River at Ballinlough, near Granard, Co. Longford.171 The skull (2002:30)172 appears to have been found on the riverbank in the dredged material, approximately 70 yards from Killeen Lake. It remained in the possession of the finder, and was only reported to the local Gardaí in 1998, after his death. The Gardaí at Granard informed the NMI through Jim Higgins, heritage officer for County Galway.
