Investigation to ascertain the archaeological potential of the area was conducted over a one-week period in March 1991. Prior to investigation the site appeared as a large irregularly shaped mound which itself lay on a knoll. It measured approximately 3m in height and approximately 20m in area. Adjoining this a curvilinear feature extended for some 50m. This feature consisted of a slight bank with a maximum height of 0.5m. As the mound was outside the actual land requirement area of the route it was not investigated. However the earthwork and the surrounding area within the take of the motorway were excavated. It was established that the curvilinear feature was of modern construction. A large ceramic pipe lay under the bank in several of the sections excavated. A field drain of stone construction was also exposed. Finds consisted of animal bone and much modern crockery.
