Excavation of part of the moat was necessitated by sewerage works by Dublin Corporation (see Excavations 1990) in October 1991. The excavation took place over a 4-week period. An area measuring 5.5m x 4.5m was excavated to a depth of 6.5m below present ground level through moat fill. Finds of 13th-century date and later were recovered.
