The site measured 15m square and archaeological assessment in advance of proposed development was undertaken in March 1991. Funding was provided by the potential developer.
Two bore holes, which were not archaeologically monitored, indicated that archaeological deposits up to 4m in thickness survived between 2.3m and 6.5m below modern ground level. These deposits consisted of organic layers containing leather, shells, silt and bones.
A single trench measuring 1.8m x 2.2m at its base was excavated to a depth of 2.9m below modern ground level. Beneath the 2.6m-deep cellars a number of superimposed layers of organic material containing lenses of ash and dumps of shells were encountered. A number of small wooden stakes and a possible post and wattle wall occurred at 2.9m below ground level and excavation was halted at this level.
