A licence to search the bed of the River Blackwater was issued to the Irish Underwater Archaeological Research Team (IUART). The work involved a number of divers and archaeologists, supervised by the Ulster Museum, and was carried out on 7th and 8th September 1991. The aim was to search an area where dredging had previously brought to light several significant metalwork finds.
Diving conditions were difficult with practically zero visibility, but searching was possible using underwater metal-detectors within roped lanes pegged to the river bed. No archaeological material was recovered.
