In 1990 human remains were discovered during underwater surveying work by the Garda Underwater Unit around Cottage Island in Lough Gill, Co. Sligo.247 No details are known regarding the disposition of the remains. Human remains (1990:95) were located off the southeastern end of the island and west of the point off the southern shore. Two wooden boats were also located in a follow-up survey of the lakebed around the island. A dugout canoe was located off the southern shore close to where human remains were found. A second plank-built boat was located off the northern shore. The SMR records a church (in ruins) and a possible enclosure at the south-eastern end of the island.248
