Excavation took place in January 1990, on a site at Dean St. due for development. The site lies between Dean Street and the River Breagagh in Kilkenny City.

A series of nine machine trenches were excavated, seven along the present street frontage and two close to the river. The trenches were located to maximise the stratigraphic information in the areas to be disturbed by piling.

Street Frontage
In five of the seven test pits a thick deposit of debris caused by site clearance meant that only 2m of undisturbed stratigraphy was excavated. Excavation reached a depth of 3m in the other two cases. Excavation reached natural deposits in all but two pits. None of the street front pits produced archaeological deposits, all the identifiable artefacts were of 19th- or 20th-century date.

Riverside
Two pits were excavated to a depth of 3m, both reached natural riverine deposits. In both cases a layer of brown organic material was uncovered beneath definitely 19th-and 20th-century deposits and above the natural riverine clay and gravel. No artefacts were recovered from this layer.
