In May 1990 human remains were discovered adjacent to the cathedral and round tower in the Chapelhill/Lourdesville area, in the townland of Kildare, Kildare town.127 The discovery was reported to the NMI by Breandán Ó Ríordáin, who noticed a human skull (1990:12) in the section face of an earthen field fence immediately north of St Brigid’s Cathedral. It was apparently lying in a depression in the earthen field bank/fence. Other fragments of human skeletal remains were visible in the weathered section, as was some animal bone and a thin stratum of charcoal-like matter. In a field to the east a green space is known locally as an old burial ground, which consequently has not been developed.
