Trial trenching of this site was carried out prior to redevelopment because the site is located beside the North Motte, and adjacent to the site of a possible corner tower on the medieval town wall. The site is located on an area of limestone sand and gravel, and this level was reached at the base of each cutting. No evidence or material was recovered which could be associated with the motte, nor was any evidence uncovered to indicate that any part of the possible tower encroaches on to the site. Trenching alongside the exterior of the town wall which forms the eastern boundary of the site indicated that the granite stone wall rests directly on compacted clay 0.28m below the present ground level of the site. The compacted clay rests directly on the sand/gravel sub-soil. There was no evidence for a ditch or moat immediately outside the town wall.
