A triangular area outside the west end of the Hall of the Vicars Choral was excavated to expose what remained of the medieval gateway to the cathedral precinct so that a new exit for visitors could be constructed here and the present entrance made safer. Evidence for two periods of gateway were uncovered, one pre-dating the 15th-century Hall of the Vicars Choral and one contemporary with it. In both cases evidence for the east gate-pier only survived. Foundations of a structure pre-dating the Hall of the Vicars Choral and roughly contemporary with the earlier gate were also found. The excavation lasted two weeks and the triangular area was reduced to the sloping bedrock apart from the wall remains.
