Introduction
In advance of the proposed construction of a new single carriageway from east of Boyle, Co. Roscommon, to west of Ballinafad, to replace the existing road across the Curlew Mountains, four sites located on the initial proposed line of the carriageway were inspected on behalf of Roscommon Co. Council, and a number of test cuttings were carried out. Having established the archaeological potential of the sites, the Local Authority has been advised of the necessity to realign the proposed carriageway to avoid interference with the sites or to arrange for archaeological excavation in advance of development which is scheduled for the years 1992-1996. The sites examined were Nos. 81, 82, 83 and 86 in Excavations 1989, and the inspections and test excavations took place during July 1989.
The site
Test cuttings revealed the presence of human skeletal remains under topsod. Part of a mortared wall was also noted. North-eastwards of these remains, which were not removed, lies a slightly banked fort-like enclosure, 25m east-west and 30m north-south, with a collapsed souterrain in the western quadrant. A well, marked 'Tobernadriney', is located immediately to the north.
