Between 9 and 14 March 1989, a trial excavation was conducted in order to determine the extent, if any, of archaeological deposits, with a view to further development on a part of the hotel property. The site was located at the north end of the medieval town. At the south-west corner of the hotel's car park are the remains of a demolished fortified house, known as Eustace Castle. Two trenches were excavated. Trench A was located in the car park, and ran east-west for 30m. Trench B was L-shaped in plan, and was located to the north of A, in a service yard. The excavation of the two trenches revealed no trace of archaeological deposits on the proposed development site, prior to the early 18th century. A great deal of modern disturbance, which cut into the natural gravel deposits, took place on the site, particularly in the 1970s.
