As part of an effort to develop tourism in the Boyne Valley, Eastern Tourism approached several American universities with a view to raising money for the excavation of the site of the friary. If this were agreed the area would then be presented to the public.
Prof. W.J. Kennedy of Florida Atlantic University undertook to carry out an intensive survey of the site in July 1988. A seed grant was made available by his university. Soil resistivity, proton magnotometry surveys and aerial photography were completed. Prof. Kennedy hopes to return in 1989.
