A trackway was excavated here in June 1988, as part of a training and research project funded by the European Social Fund. The trackway was composed in the main of thinly split oak plants placed in two or three layers upon a basal structure of irregular brushwood. The lower plank layers were laid transversely to the line of the trackway. The uppermost level, which composed the walking surface, consisted of a narrow band of longitudinally laid planks. Thus, though the width of the track was in places up to 3m, the restricted width of the actual walking surface suggests that the track was intended only for pedestrians. Preliminary dendrochronological examination indicates a construction date for the track late in the 10th century BC.
