A small office development is planned for this site which lies within the walled medieval city of Dublin. Before planning permission was sought, four boreholes were sunk to determine the nature of subsoil conditions. The developer paid for archaeological supervision of the boreholes.
The fill of the top 2-3 metres comprised loose black soil which contained charcoal, mortar and fragments of brick and stone. In two of the boreholes, under the black fill, was a layer of grey brown silty mud which contained very occasional flecks of charcoal.
Underneath these layers was a dark grey/black silty mud which contained tiny wood chippings, charcoal and fragments of animal bone, all of which occurred very infrequently. This was 0.5m-0.9m deep. Underneath was a natural gravel layer, overlying bedrock. The only find was a very corroded iron nail, found in the top layer.
