In 1987 Dr Kieran O’Conor of the Archaeological Survey reported the discovery of a possible early Bronze Age cist burial at Kilmacot, Co. Wexford.9 According to O’Conor’s report, a large oval stone which was lying flat on the ground at the time of his survey had once been lifted by the farmer to reveal a ‘large reddish pottery vessel’ containing ashes and splinters of bone. The farmer had replaced the slab and left the site undisturbed. According to O’Conor’s report, the site was located on flat ground, on a high shelf overlooking a stream and a small, waterlogged river valley.
