Two areas 0.3m x 0.3m were excavated to a depth of 0.6m and soil samples were collected for macrofossil analysis. The samples were collected every 20mm. The two sites are located in a valley running north-south on the eastern side of Knockadoon. Sample site no. 1 is located 2m west of the modern stone wall, west of Knockadoon site 1. The second sampling site is located on the southernmost terrace, 1.8m west of the stone wall.
The macrofossil analysis is part of a larger study of the palaeoenvironment of Lough Gur and is funded by the Limnological Research Center, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, U.S.A. The sampling was done in one day in June 1987. No archaeological material was found during the sampling process.
