This small investigation was carried out on behalf of the Historic Monuments and Buildings Branch, DOE (NI), as part of its contribution to the work of the Navan Research Group.
A small patch of charcoal was observed in the side of a modern gap in the linear earthwork at the approximate level of the old ground surface. The excavation was mounted to determine the relationship of the charcoal layer to the earthwork in the hope of using the charcoal to obtain C14 dates which could be related to the construction of the earthwork. The excavation found that the charcoal was likely to have been of recent origin. A row of stakeholes of uncertain age was found in the subsoil in the side of the gap.
An illustrated account of the investigation has been placed in the Northern Ireland Sites and Monuments Record and formal publication is not contemplated.
